How mobile phones are changing the digital economy of Africa

By Béchir Abba-Goni and Marc Bidan

Africa's mobile market, second only to that of the Asia-Pacific region, has huge potential for growth.

Figures published by the global GSM Association in Tanzania are breathtaking. Every five years, the group collects data from its 800 network carriers. Putting these figures together with research carried out in the Sahel region provides an illuminating picture of mobile use across the continent.

According to the GSMA report, by the end of 2015, nearly half of the 1.17 billion-strong African population (557 million people) had some kind of mobile phone plan.

They now amount to 12% of all individual subscribers in the world, and make up 6% of global revenue – a 70% increase when compared to figures published by the same source just five years earlier.

Two main user characteristics emerge from studies carried out in the field. First, users favour pre-paid packages. Second, each subscriber owns 1.92 SIM cards on average.

Setting aside the problems this poses for identification and traceability, and the resulting complications for operators, this means that the market for SIM cards is huge – almost a billion units (965 million) at the end of 2015, and an estimated 1.3 billion by the end of 2020.

This spectacular growth in demand should result in 730 million individual subscribers by 2020. Unsurprisingly, the figures vary widely from country to country. For instance, data from 2014 shows that the top five countries (Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo) account for about 44% of the total, while the bottom 30 countries only make up 10%.

Similarly, the actual rate of overall market penetration for SIM cards amongst people aged 15 and over is 67% (taking into account those who own several cards); some countries (Mali, Gambia, Gabon and Botswana) boast a rate of more than 100%.

Landlines met with little success (because customer experience left much to be desired) over the second half of the 20th century, and this seems to have boosted demand for mobile phones. This means mobile use today is inversely related to that of landlines in the past.

In a 2G continent, 4G is expanding fast

The African market remains largely dominated by 2G packages, but high-speed mobile connections (4G/LTE) are gaining ground.

In 2015, 46/LTE represented 25% of the market; this will rise to an estimated 60% by 2020. Half of the 4G networks currently in use are less than two years old and 4G has just been made available in 24 countries. Smartphone sales now account for 23% of the mobile phone market.

These sales are set to increase as infrastructure is modernised and network coverage improves, as are those of low-cost and counterfeit phones from Asia that are flooding the market across the entire continent due to ever lower prices. Currently, these low-cost phone make up 50% of the market.

Potential growth in revenue per subscriber remains high, especially when compared with figures from Europe or North America, but it is dependent upon a wider range of options, better network coverage and improved service quality. Estimated revenue for an average African subscriber is €8 per month (ranging from €2 in Ethiopia to €28 in Gabon), against €27 per month in Europe and €53 per month in North America.

A 2013 report had already shown the high potential for mobiles, their ecosystem and their contribution, both direct and indirect, to growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2012, for example, economic activity related to mobile phones and their life-cycle accounted for about 3.3 million jobs and 6.3% of the region's GDP, while market penetration was less than 40%. This demonstrates a massive potential for growth, with the arrival of 4G-LTE networks (although prices are still prohibitive for most users).

This robust activity comes with its own characteristics, chiefly arising from Africa's substantial informal economy (which, as a side note, is shamelessly exploited by developed countries). Just look at how easy it is to repair a smartphone, by virtue of some creative handiwork in markets and souks like the one at Derb Ghallef in Morocco.

This does not translate to the phones being easily recycable, however. Phones are mainly disposed of in landfills and unauthorised markets like that of Agbogbloshie in Ghana. At a time when Africa is hosting the COP22, we must bring attention to the sector's catastrophic social and environmental impact.

Gaps in the market

African consumers, like those across the world, are demanding and informed. They want clear, reliable, smooth running mobile solutions, especially as a way to compensate for the continent's real – or perceived – shortfalls. They have appropriated the technology in innovative ways (beeping, flashing, credit transfer).

From the electronic purse to secure commercial transactions to group savings systems, the growth of mobile banking in Africa, like that of all developing regions, is extraordinary.

Aside from network reliability, consumer demand centres around messaging, sound quality, data and ease of communication, but also e-payment, e-insurance and e-learning. Users can thus circumvent the banking and administrative red tape that is partly responsible for the seldom used formal banking system. From the electronic purse to secure commercial transactions to group savings systems, the growth of mobile banking in Africa, like that of all developing regions, is extraordinary.

Consider, for instance, the amazing success of the shopping and bill settling solutions offered by M-PESA in Kenya, or the market penetration of mobile insurance solutions, mobile learning and distance education.

But consumer appetite for mobile phones is sometimes plainly stifled. Several factors explain this phenomenon, despite the general consensus that the technology contributes to development. Simply consider the lack of coverage, where vast rural areas are still under-serviced, or the inadequate pricing offers, given the continent's weak buying power. The unreliability of operators due to technical, financial or structural problems explains why there is an average of two SIM cards per person on the continent, and the popularity of mobiles with dual SIM capacity.

We could also mention Africa's low literacy rate, or consumer reticence due to the apparent complexity of learning about, and using, information technology (despite the youth and creativity of most of the potential users).

The range of applications available is still largely inconsistent with the actual needs – be they to do with agriculture, education, health, food or services – of a large and disadvantaged proportion of the population. Few are available in the customers' regional and national languages.

Supply is rapidly adapting

Unsurprisingly, given that it represents operators, manufacturers and other producers, GSMA stresses the importance of a new regulatory framework for the digital ecosystem, underscoring the detrimental effect that taxes are having on the development of mobile services in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Tanzania and Tunisia, notably.

In its July 2016 report, the group also stated that operators' profit margins will only decline as markets become increasingly aggressive and network investment capacities are falling. The fact that EBITDA margins, which hovered around 40% in 2010, will likely decrease to around 30% by 2020, illustrates the need to address questions about the sector's profitability, although the outlook for total revenue remains optimistic ($153 billion in 2015, rising to $210 billion by 2020.)

GSMA also highlights upcoming opportunities and challenges. First of all, opportunities for telecommunication operators to provide security, distribution and value-creation (monetizing data content) for data collected across the entire continent. There are also significant opportunities provided by the increasing, but still modest, rise of platform solutions for B2B transactions.

Digital transformation is inevitable

In addition to clients and regulatory authorities, the GSMA sees the cost of licensing and taxes on imports such as mobile phone accessories as a challenge that will be counterproductive to growth in the sector.

In addition to clients and regulatory authorities, the GSMA sees the cost of licensing and taxes on imports such as mobile phone accessories (cables, headphones, cameras, flash disks and so on) as a challenge that will be counterproductive to growth in the sector. It also highlights the lack of clarity surrounding taxation and national legislation, which deters many transnational investors, and the immaturity of regulators, which hinders the harmonisation and allocation of terrestrial frequencies. It seems clear that the digital recycling sector, relating to the life-cycle of all high-tech products, must be completely re-examined, cleaned up, made viable and profitable in the long run throughout the continent.

Digital technology in Africa can and should be sustainable. The African continent has the most remarkable potential for growth, creativity and transformation, such as the silicon moutain of Africa in Cameroon.

The issues and challenges are as vast as Africa itself. Let us hope that the key players in this inevitable, irreversible and accelerating transformation won't lose sight of the human aspect.

2017 Is The Year Of Futuristic Phones; iPhone 8, Galaxy S8 And Noki P1 To Make Their Debut

2016 has been a very captivating year for smartphone fans, but 2017 is looking set to be even bigger and brighter. Nokia has already confirmed that it will be making its long-awaited return to the smartphone market, rumor says that Microsoft will finally be debuting the so-called Surface Phone, and Samsung's Galaxy Note range looks set to make an epic comeback.

With all that being said, here's a roundup of the best smartphones you can expect to see in 2017:

iPhone 8

With 2017 marking the 10th-anniversary of Apple's smartphone lineup, speculations are firing that the firm has something big in store.

If rumors are to be believed, Apple will be skipping on the iPhone 7S to go directly on the iPhone 8, which analysts are claiming to be the most radically redesigned iPhone yet with its (rumored) 'all-glass' design and OLED screen.

There have also been talks that the iPhone 8 will be supporting wireless charging and Touch ID sensor embedded in its display. An all-new "Pro" model is also rumored to feature an S7 Edge-style curved display and dual camera setup. Apple's iPhone 8 is expected to debut in September 2017.

Samsung Galaxy S8

There have already been confirmations that Samsung is coming, and several leaks online have revealed what we can potentially expect from the up and coming Galaxy S8.

Following the footsteps of rival Apple's iPhone, the Galaxy S8 is going to be the first smartphone to feature Samsung's own artificial intelligence (AI) assistant built-in. According to other rumors, the Galaxy S8 will also be dumping the headphone jack (like what Apple did), in favor of audio over USB-C.

Another speculation has pointed towards a 2K-resolution AMOLED Edge display, built-in IP68 certification, fingerprint and iris scanners, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 power, and a dual rear-facing camera feature. According to reports, the Galaxy S8 will likely debut at Mobile World Congress in February of 2017.

New 5-inch iPhone 7S might feature a vertical dual lens camera

Many rumors swirling about the iPhone 8 forecast a third iPhone model in 2017.

Apple's plans for its 2017 lineup of iPhones has just gotten a bit more confusing with a new rumor alleging that the manufacturer is going to launch a 5-inch iPhone. They will also have an OLED display and glass casing which will likely support a new Apple iPhone feature, wireless charging.

On Tuesday, unnamed supply chain sources told Apple news blog Mac Otakara in Taiwan that Apple is working on three new models for 2017.

One thing that people need to understand is, in order to get a free Apple iPhone 4, you need to find the sites that are offering the promotion, and then simply fill out the information. However, Macotakara's report claims it will simply be dubbed the "iPhone 7s". We've been hearing reports for some time that the 10th anniversary iPhone will be a major update.

The Cupertino-based company now offers the iPhone 7 in two screen sizes; one with a 4.7-inch display and other with a 5.5-inch screen. One of the reasons there isn't a dual camera on the iPhone 7 is that it might not fit inside it. After all - according to this report - the only difference between the two is the camera.

iPhone announcements are traditionally done in September, so we still have nine months to go before we learn anything official, but expect many more rumors to appear in the coming months.

It's believed, however, that Apple is saving the big design changes for an entirely new iPhone 8 model. Until this latest report, we've heard nothing further on the subject. But it has already seen that such a similar design with the Mi 5s which boasts with a fingerprint sensor and a home button under the glass.

LG G6 leaked schematics affirm company’s new design language for phones

If the LG G5 and V20 has shown us anything, it's that the chaebol really seems to like its dual-camera implementation. So much so, in fact, that it may carry on the phones' design language for another season.

Shai Mizrachi, in partnership with Android Authority, has leaked out a generic design diagram showing off the X and Y dimensions of the phone, along with some feature call-outs.

The dual-camera module is similar to those seen in LG's past two flagship phones with a fingerprint sensor placed below it and some side-mounted volume buttons to follow. There's a circular port on one of the Y edges that's likely a headphone jack, but we aren't entirely sure what's going on here.

The new LG G6 by me and @AndroidAuth pic.twitter.com/AMhqrQXTHJ

— Shai Mizrachi (@ShaiMizrachi) December 26, 2016

The 72.43mm width of the phone is about 1.5mm slimmer than the G5. The thickness may also get cut down, too, but that's undetermined at this point.

The phone is expected out about the same time as last year, either around or shortly after MWC 2017.

Polaroid Land Camera SX-70 – Not So Secret Obsession.

I have a few of these cameras, in this exact style, sitting in a drawer.  Now that my phone takes photos and automatically loads them to my computer without any effort on my part, it all seems so tedious to use these cameras.  Plus, the film, if available is roughly $1 a photo.  I hope to pull them out again and play with them.  Some day.

Land cameras are instant cameras with self-developing film named after their inventor, Edwin Land, manufactured by Polaroid between the years of 1947 and 1983. Though Polaroid continued producing instant cameras after 1983, the name 'Land' was dropped from the camera name since Edwin Land retired in 1982. The first commercially available model was the Polaroid Land Camera Model 95, which produced prints in about 1 minute, and was first sold to the public in November, 1948.

The SX-70 is a folding single lens reflex Land camera which was produced by the Polaroid Corporation from 1972-1981.

The SX-70 included many sophisticated design elements. A collapsible SLR required a complex light path for the viewfinder, with three mirrors (including one Fresnel reflector) of unusual, aspheric shapes set at odd angles to create an erect image on the film and an erect aerial image for the viewfinder.[3] Many mechanical parts were precision plastic moldings. The body was glass-filled polysulfone, a very rigid plastic which could be plated with genuine copper-nickel-chromium. Models 2 & 3 used the less expensive and more-easily cracked ABS in either Ebony or Ivory color. The film pack contained a flat, 6-volt "PolaPulse" battery to power the camera electronics, drive motor and flash. The original flash system, a disposable "Flash Bar" of 10 bulbs from General Electric, used logic circuits to detect and fire the next unused flash.

Polaroid SX-70 film was introduced to the market in 1972, and was a market success despite some problems with the batteries on early film packs. The original SX-70 film was improved once in the mid-'70s (New Improved Faster Developing!) and replaced in 1980 by the further advanced "SX-70 Time-Zero Supercolor" product, in which the layers in the film pack were altered to allow a much faster development time (hence the "time zero"). It also had richer, brighter colors than the original 1972 product. There were also professional market varieties of the SX-70 film including 778 (Time Zero equivalent) and the similar 708, Time Zero film without a battery, intended for use in applications such as the "Face Place" photo booth and professional or laboratory film-backs, where a battery is not needed. Time Zero was the film manufactured up until 2005, though overseas-market and some last run film packs were marked only as SX-70.

Huawei to showcase a new dual-camera phone on December 23

Huawei is apparently looking to release more dual-camera phones in the Indian smartphone market. We have already seen a couple of dual-camera phones in India, and with Huawei being at the forefront of the technology thanks to its partnership with Leica, we can expect great things from these upcoming phones.

The Chinese manufacturer is hosting an event tomorrow in the country. While the agenda hasn't been revealed yet, the arrival of these dual-camera mid-rangers is being speculated by the industry. The phone will break cover under the company's Honor brand.

After its announcement in India, the phone will also be announced at the CES event early next month, apparently. While dual-camera phones are not new to India, the fact that this will be a mid-ranged device has built up some excitement. As of now, all the dual-camera handsets that are sold in India come with a premium price tag. So by launching a mid-ranger with these features on board, Huawei can tap into a whole new world of customers.

Naturally, there's no word on what else this mystery handset will feature on board, but since we're only a day away from the event, we expect all the secrets to be revealed fairly soon.

Microsoft Surface Phone News: Reasons Why It Is The Best Smartphone To Come Out Next Year

#Microsoft #SurfacePhone – Microsoft Surface Phone News: Reasons Why It Is The Best Smartphone To Come Out Next Year : According to what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella hinted recently, the rumored Microsoft Surface phone might have a future release date. However, Nadella ceased from providing any more important details. On the other hand, the company chief stated that the Windows 10 device will be the very best by the time it comes out.

    MICROSOFT SURFACE PHONE: SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE

According to recent speculations, the said mobile phone would likely be powered by the brand new Snapdragon 835 chipset of Qualcomm. The said chip is scheduled to come out on various smartphones next year. In addition, it is believed that it will be a direct series to the top-end Snapdragon 821 and 820 chips.

For those who are unaware, the Snapdragon 821 and 820 has already been featured in OnePlus 3T, Google Pixel phones, and the Samsung Galaxy S8. in addition, it is also believed that the Microsoft Surface phone is sporting a massive 6GB of RAM

MICROSOFT SURFACE PHONE: TO SUPPORT EMULATED DESKTOP APPS & ARM CHIPSET

According to reports, the upcoming smartphone will feature a support for Win32 applications. As a result, the users would be able to run legacy windows program that is primarily used in PCs. Furthermore, the presence of the Win32 apps is said to be enough to convince the Android and iOS users to buy the Windows-powered smartphone.

According to mobile phones enthusiast, the Win32 apps support would give the Surface phone an edge over Android and iPhone devices. The Win32 apps support would turn the smartphone into a fully functional PC.

    MICROSOFT SURFACE PHONE: SUPERIOR CAMERA

Reports suggest that the Surface phone is sporting a 20-MP rear camera with an 8-MP front camera. In addition, it would also feature a dual camera, as well as Carl Zeiss lens. LeEco Le Max3 Leaked with Snapdragon 821 SoC, to Feature 13MP Dual Rear Cameras

LeEco is the latest Chinese smartphone brand to test its fortune in the U.S market. The company has debuted the Chinese smartphone market in 2014 by launching the LeEco Le 1, Le 1 Pro, and Le Max. Now, it also has some good sales in India with the earlier launched Le 1S, Le 2, and Le Max 2 smartphones. Though the company is now selling its smartphones in the U.S, we hope the company isn't doing what it might it might have thought. While the Le Pro 3 powered by Snapdragon 821 SoC is the latest smartphone to be launched by the company. In November, a new flagship smartphone from LeEco with the model number LeX850 is spotted on TENAA. Apart from the camera module, the design looks similar to the LePro 3 with brushed Aluminum body. Now the about page screenshot shared on Weibo confirms the LEX850 to be launched as Le Max3 smartphone.

It will be the successor to the popular Le Max2 smartphone that came with Snapdragon 820 SoC and 6GB of RAM. Coming to the design part, the curved Antenna bands can be found on the top and bottom edge of the device. A few months back, we had reported about the LeEco LeX650 which is expected to be the first ever dual camera smartphone from the company. Now the LeX850 also sports the dual camera setup and features even better specifications than the Le X650. It sports the same 5.7-inch IPS display with Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution as on Le Max2. Under the hood, the device will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor clocked at 2.34GHz and coupled with Adreno 530 GPU. From the TENAA listing, the device comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

We also expect to see 6GB RAM variant with 128GB of onboard storage. It runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow based EUI 5.8 OS and the Android 7.0 Nougat update can't be expected anytime soon. While the Le Max2 came with a 3,100mAh non-removable battery, the upcoming Le X850 features a 3,900mAh battery along with Quick Charge 3.0 support. However, the biggest changes can be found in the camera department. The Le X850 sports 13MP dual rear cameras with dual tone LED flash and a 16MP selfie camera on the front. Though the Le Max2 came with a 21MP sensor, the Le X850 with dual 13MP sensor might capture even better images. The device lacks the 3.5mm audio port but comes with a USB Type-C earphones using the CDLA technology. According to the listing, the device will be available in Gray and Gold color options.

It measures 157.25 × 77.95 × 7.99 mm and weighs 185 grams. The Le X850 supports dual SIM dual standby and offers 4G VoLTE connectivity. As of now, there is no information about the launch of this device. Last week, the company also launched a new smartphone called Cool S1 in collaboration with Coolpad. It is the same Le Pro3 but comes with a minor changes and additionally comes with custom made Harman AKG Earphones. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for the official specifications along with the pricing and availability of the upcoming Le Max3 smartphone.

Will Microsoft Launch Surface Phone in February? Rumors, Specs

New rumors suggests that Microsoft Corporation will launch the much-awaited Surface Phone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in early 2017. Earlier, the rumors mill suggested that the Phone will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2017. According to latest rumors, the Windows 10 Mobile-powered smartphone, which is deemed as the iPhone killer, will be introduce during the MWC, which will take place in Barcelona, Spain, from February 27 to March 2.

The Redmond-based tech giant has setup a web page where MWC visitors can arrange meetings during the annual mobile showcase in Barcelona, according to a report from Trusted Reviews. The software titan is promising to "do great things" at the upcoming mobile industry gathering.

While there is a possibility of the Surface Phone's launch, the tech giant may be making announcements related to its progress in bringing the full version of Windows 10 to mobile devices. Earlier this month, Microsoft and Qualcomm announced that they are working to bring full Windows 10 support to devices running the Snapdragon processors. These are going to be the first ARM-based processors that enable users to run full desktop apps on phones and PCs.

    Microsoft Surface Phone Rumors

Microsoft Corporation is said to introduce three variant of the Surface Phone: a consumer model; a business model; and an enthusiast edition. The business model is target business and corporate users, according to the rumors mill. The base model will feature 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, with a mid-range offering coming with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The Surface Phone would support Win32 apps, allowing users to run legacy Windows program that they run on their PCs. The availability of Win32 apps on the Phone would encourage Android and iOS users to buy the Windows phone. Tech pundits believe that the Surface Phone could get an edge over iPhone and Android devices if it comes with Win32 apps support.

The Surface Phone is expected to sport a 20 megapixel rear camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. As far as the processor inside the Phone is concerned, there isn't a clear picture. Some reports suggest that the Surface Phone will feature a Kaby Lake processor from Intel. Recent rumors indicate that the Phone will come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors.

The Surface Phone, to be powered by Windows 10 Redstone operating system, is said to come with a unique fingerprint sensor. The tech giant recently filed a patent suggesting to integrate a fingerprint sensor on the phone's display.

    Surface Phone Price

According to the rumors mill, the Surface Phone would cost between $699-$1100. The base model is expected to get a price tag of $699, while the high-end phone (may be the business model) would be offered at $1,099. Source: learnbonds

The Honor Magic Concept Phone Unveiled

    honormagic

Huawei's best known release for 2016 is undoubtedly the dual camera sporting Huawei P9 and P9 Plus that's gotten the stamp of approval from famed camera manufacturer, Leica. While these flagship phones from the Chinese brand are definitely making a splash, their Honor line of phones — that often get renamed when it hits the Southeast Asia market — do draw a lot of attention as well. While we're still waiting for their latest flagship — the Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro — to hit Philippines shores, Huawei's Honor sub-brand just dropped an awesome concept phone with curves in places we've never seen before — The Honor Magic.

    Let's check out its specs.

    Honor Magic Specs

  • Kirin 950 octa-core processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 5.09-Inch curved QHD AMOLED display; (2560×1440; 587 pixels per inch)
  • 64GB of storage
  • Dual 12-megapixel rear cameras at f/2.2
  • 8-megapixel front camera at f/2.4
  • 3G, LTE
  • Dual SIM (Second SIM 2G only)
  • Fingerprint Scanner
  • IR Front Camera
  • 2900mAh battery
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow; Magic Live UI
  • honormagic02

Despite sporting a Kirin 950 SoC that we saw in the Mate 8, The Honor Magic definitely has a couple of things up its sleeves, such as: Fast Charging that internal tests have shown to get the phone from 0 to 40-percent in just 10 minutes and to 70-percent in 20 minutes and the IR Camera up front that's equipped with Tobii Eye Tracking. This IR Camera is an added layer security on top of the fingerprint scanner; much like the one found in the late Galaxy Note 7. This also for a feature called FaceCode, which hides all your notifications until the Honor Magic recognizes you.

The Honor Magic will only be available in China and is priced at 3,699 Yuan or Php 26,533.

The Best iOS Camera App Updated for the iPhone 7 Plus' Dual Camera

    Image: Gizmodo

Camera+ is one of the best photo apps for iOS and now it's even better because it supports the iPhone 7 Plus' dual camera as well as support for taking and editing RAW photos.

The update, which is free for existing users (the app costs $2.99), is one of the most significant the app has seen in quite some time.

7 Camera Apps Better Than the One on Your Phone 7 Camera Apps Better Than the One on Your Phone 7 Camera Apps Better Than the One on Your Phone

You might not give much thought to the app that snaps all those photos on your phone, but you don't … Read more Read more

The dual lens support on the iPhone 7 Plus works via a toggle. You can choose between the wide angle lens (the regular camera), the telephoto lens (the one with that extra zoom), or you can put it in "Duo" mode and get a combination of the two. Having the option to explicitly choose what camera you want is a big deal because in the normal camera app, Apple will sometimes use the wide angle rather than the telephoto, even when you choose 2x zoom.

The other big feature addition is RAW support. The RAW format is preferred by professional photographers because it allows for more granular control over colors, color balance, and brightness. That means that when you edit the photos, you can get better results than with images that are simply processed by the built-in image sensor.

Camera+ supports RAW shooting for the iPhone 6S/6S Plus, the iPhone SE, and the iPhone 7/7 Plus. Keep in mind that if you enable RAW shooting, the photos will take up more space on your phone. The app also supports editing of RAW photos inside its editor, known as "The Lab."

I've had a chance to play with the new Camera+ update and it's just terrific. If you've been looking for a way to enhance your new iPhone's camera, definitely check it out.

Google Pixel is a Top-Notch Android Phone

The Google Pixel is Google's flagship phone release for 2016, replacing the Nexus lineup. As before, these high-end Android handsets are meant to showcase the Android experience with Nougat, the latest major update to Android. We've already reviewed the Pixel XL, the larger of the two Pixels, and found it to be one of the best Android phones currently available. If you're curious about the less expensive, 5-inch Pixel, though, here's what tech reviewers and owners are saying about that phone. Who is it for? The Google Pixel is designed for consumers who want the very best of Google, including a version of Android that isn't loaded down with UI overlays or "skins" provided by other Android phone makers. Some customers view Google's smartphones as the very best Android offers, because they come with the latest in Android and receive new updates and security patches directly from Google if purchased unlocked. In years past, carrier-locked versions of Google smartphones experienced some delay with updates as compared to Google Store-bought handsets. But even then, Google smartphones still received the latest updates weeks ahead of buyers of other Android handsets. The $649 Google Pixel is a carrier exclusive with Verizon, though smartphone buyers can purchase an unlocked model from the Google Store to use with other carriers or Google's own Project Fi wireless service. Expect to pay $27.08 a month by way of Verizon's installment plan or $27.04 per month if you use Google's financing plan. Key Specs and Features The Google Pixel features a 5-inch, AMOLED display with Corning's Gorilla Glass 4 and a full-HD resolution of 1920 x 1080p (441ppi); Qualcomm's high-end quad-core Snapdragon 821 SoC; 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM; 32/128GB of storage; an 8-megapixel front camera and 12.3MP back camera; and a 2,770-mAh battery. Really, the only differences between the Pixel and the larger Pixel XL are the screen resolution (the Pixel XL's 5.5-inch display boasts a 2560 x 1440 display) an d battery size (the XL has a 3,450-mAh power pack that lasted more than 11 hours on our battery test). The Pixel's AMOLED panel has been supplied by none other than Samsung (a change from last year's LG-built Nexus 5X that featured an LCD panel). If you're familiar with Samsung displays and their inky blacks and deep colors, you'll find yourself in familiar territory with the Pixel's display. The Snapdragon 821 inside the Pixel is an incremental SoC update compared to the Snapdragon 820, but it offers a minor speed bump over the Snapdragon 820; more importantly, it also makes the Pixel compatible with Google's Daydream virtual reality platform and the Daydream View VR headset. The Nexus 5X that the Pixel replaces featured only 2GB of RAM, so it's noteworthy that the Pixel doubles that amount to 4GB. Google has traded in the 16GB and 32GB storage configurations of the Nexus 5X in favor of 32GB and 128GB storage capacities on the Pixel. The Google Pixel will run Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, with an update to 7.1 that the search engine giant has already released for the handset, along with Android Pay compatibility and the usual Google services. As usual, Google phone buyers have access to the latest OS updates and security patches before the rest of their Android-phone-toting brethren. What Reviewers Say About the Google Pixel Our earlier Pixel review focused on the XL, so here's what other tech reviewers think of the smaller Pixel. TechRadar says the Pixel has "mediocre" battery life, an uninspiring design and a "very good" camera, but the camera isn't as great as mobile photography experts deem it to be. (Our camera face-off came to a different conclusion.) Meanwhile, The Guardian says that while the Pixel is Google's best smartphone yet, it isn't good enough to topple Samsung's Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge in areas such as battery life and expandable storage. TechnoBuffalo says that the Pixel is an Android phone for those who want Google-only software, bu t that the high price sticks out when assessing the phone's "boring" hardware. VentureBeat also criticizes the design, saying "Google's design is flimsier" than the build quality of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. What Owners Say About the Google Pixel Based on user reviews at Amazon and Best Buy, many Pixel owners like that Google offers unlimited photo and video cloud storage of photos at full quad-HD resolution (a first for Android). They also view the camera as one of the best parts of the phone, along with the AMOLED panel that provides deep, vivid colors. The Pixel Imprint fingerprint reader, the presence of few carrier-specific apps, the guarantee of fast Android updates and the 24/7 chat support in the event of a device emergency are noteworthy advantages for Google's phone. Other Pixel owners take issue with the lack of software features in the Pixel, noting that the Google app suite is what you find on every Android smartphone with Play Store access. Some owners criticize the smaller phone's battery life and its lack a microSD card slot, which prevents them from expanding the Pixel's storage. Additionally, the similarity of the Pixel's design to that of the iPhone is hard to escape: One owner notes that his friend believed the Pixel was an iPhone when seeing it for the first time. Other sources of frustration include the position of the fingerprint sensor on the back of the Pixel, the phone's lack of wireless charging and the lack of included headphones. Upshot We think very highly of the Pixel XL, and it sounds like the Pixel is just as solid a choice if you prefer a 5-inch phone. The Pixel's camera is considered one of the most fantastic parts of the experience, with basic Google apps and services, along with a pure Android experience, thrown in. Be prepared to accept a lower resolution and less battery life if you opt for Google's less expensive Pixel, though.

From Feature Phones to Smartphones: Nokia's Milestones in the Global Market

Nokia lost the competition in the mobile phone market, but it could be difficult to point a mobile user who hasn't used a Nokia handset in their life. For most middle-aged mobile users, a phone from Nokia would have been the first ever handset that they owned.

Now, Nokia is in the headlines as the company is planning to launch Android-powered smartphones in 2017 in collaboration with HMD Global.

Will the New Nokia Phones be Affordable?

TL;DR — Rumors Say They Will Be

We've been hearing rumblings that Finnish phone brand, Nokia, would be making a comeback and, much to the delight of Titos and Titas of Manila whose first phone may have been the tank-like 5110, the second coming of Nokia was confirmed a few weeks ago. The brand will be at next year's Mobile World Congress and the phone they've been working on, the Nokia D1C, has had its specs leaked for its two variants. The Nokia D1C will have Full HD 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch variants with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 at its core. The smaller version will have 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel main shooter, while the 5.5-inch version will get 3GB of RAM and a 16-megapixel rear camera. The new crop of Nokia smartphones will also be running on Android 7.0 out of the box. Given the leaked specs we're seeing, we shouldn't expect to see an enormous price tag for these phones and their rumored pricing had us giving it a nod of approval.

According to our source, the Nokia D1C could possibly be priced as low as $150 (Php 7473) with the bigger of the two getting a $200 (PHP 9965), which sounds about right for similarly spec'd phones out in the market. Mobile World Congress is still a few months away, so we're going to have to wait and see how accurate these rumors are.

ASUS ZenFone 3 ZE552KL Review: Bigger, Better, Probably the Best Midrange Phone of 2016 (Video)

With 2016 coming to a close soon, we can't help but judge each and every phone we come across as a potential entry in the top 10 of the year. And ASUS ZenFone 3 certainly deserves a spot, no matter the version you're talking about. So, after reviewing the 5.2 inch model, today we have a glance at the 5.5 incher. It's dubbed ASUS ZenFone 3 ZE552KL and it's a 5.5 inch metal and glass phone priced at $450.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_064

It's an upper midranger launched at the end of summer and packing 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. Available in black, white or gold, the handset adopts the same design traits as its smaller version, with a 2.5D glass panel upfront and one at the back. The 5.5 inch screen has a 77.3% screen to body ratio and it's quite slim, at 7.69 mm in waistline, the same as the ZE520KL.

It's also 0.39 mm thicker than the Huawei Nova Plus, probably its biggest rival on the market. The phone weighs 155 grams, meaning it's 5 grams lighter than the Nova Plus and the same weight as the LG G4. There's a dual glass panel (front and back), a solid metal frame and a protruding back camera. This phone is wide and big, certainly not easy to use with a single hand.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_099

It has a solid build and it's made of premium materials, also flaunting a very nice concentric circle pattern when it catches the light. Buttons are quite comfy to press and use and the device has an overall great look and build. It kind of sits weirdly on the camera, that protrudes a bit, though. Now as far as the display goes, we're getting a 5.5 inch Super IPS+ panel with a Full HD resolution and a 2.1 mm bezel.

178 degree view angles are available here and we are promised 600 nits of brightness on paper. There's also Gorilla Glass 3 protection here and oleophobic protection too. There's no video player, so we had to resort to the Gallery for video playback purposes. The viewing experience brought us OK colours, solid brightness and wide view angles, plus good contrast, but the black was not very deep.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_097

Pixels have an RGB Stripes arrangement and the brightness we measured is 500 LUX, which is very nice and all, but not quite constant since some areas of the screen offer 479 LUX or 488 LUX of brightness. Luckily you can't notice the difference with the naked eye. With the above mentioned value we surpassed the OnePlus 2, LG G4 and Lumia 950 XL for example.

We also scored below the iPhone 7 and Xiaomi Mi 5. Settings include brightness, font style, font size, as well as screen color mode. There you'll find a color temperature slide and Modes like Balance, Blue Light Filter, Vivid and Custom (hue and saturation sliders). What's key here is that we register a big brightness growth from the ZenFone 2, but we do remain inferior tot he ZenFone 3 ZE520KL, that had 547 LUX to offer.

Now we look into the internals of the smartphone and we find an octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 CPU, a 14 nm unit at 2 GHz, the same one as the chipset from the ZE520KL and Huawei Nova/Nova Plus. There's an Adreno 506 GPU in the mix and 3 or 4 GB of LPDDR3 RAM. We've got 64 GB of storage, a microSD card slot and luckily no trace or lag, plus fluid functioning. Performance is good and the apps start up fast.

Games like Riptide GP Renegade run fine, without any frame drop or hassle. Benchmarks like AnTuTu or Quadrant also delivered solid results. We even beat the Galaxy S6 Edge+ in Quadrant and the Galaxy Note 5. In AnTuTu 6 we surpassed the HTC One A9 and scored in identical fashion with the ZE520KL almost, but below the Huawei Nova. 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited also brought a score above the Huawei Nova Plus and iPhone 5S, but below the Vernee Apollo Lite and Xperia Z3.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_053

We're happy with the performance, so let's talk temperature. We achieved 31.2 degrees Celsius after running GFXBench and 34.6 degrees after Riptide, so there's no overheating here. Time to talk battery! We've got a 3000 mAh Li-Ion unit here, an upgrade from the ZE520KL's 2650 mAh unit. Our HD video playback test brought us to 11 hours and 31 minutes of playback time, which is very good.

    battery-1

It surpasses the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Lenovo Vibe X3, but scores below the iPhone SE and Xiaomi Mi5. In PCMark we reached 9 hours and 46 minutes, which is the eighth best performance from all the models we've tested. It's a great result and it certainly beats the Galaxy S7 Edge and Huawei Mate 8 for example. Still, it's inferior to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro and Xperia X compact.

Charging is done in 1 hour and 49 minutes, which is quite nice and superior to the ZenFone 2. Still, we charged slower than the Nexus 6P. Settings include Battery Optimization and the following modes: Performance, Normal, Power Saving, Super Saving and Custom. The first two let you adjust the CPU and brightness, while the Power Saving disables the Internet in sleep mode and Super Saving disables all networks.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_046

Custom lets you tweak brightness and Internet. It's a great battery overall and there's not much to object about here. Now let's get to the speakers. We've actually only got one, at the bottom of the device and we're using Play Music to well… play music. There's also an Audio Wizard app, that will offer modes like Movie, Music, Gaming, Outdoor, Smart and Vocal, depending on your needs and the content you play.

There's also an Advanced section, with tweaks for volume, bass and treble, as well as dialog enhancement and a 5 channel EQ. The listening experience brought on a loud and clear sound, no distortion and a pretty good bass, plus a crisp rendition of songs. The outdoor mode does distort things a bit, though. We proceeded to do a decibelmeter test and achieved 80 dBA, using our typical audio sample, as well as 92.8 dBA running Riptide GP Renegade, which is quite a solid result, actually one of the biggest.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_049

We surpassed the Galaxy S6 and the ASUS ZenFone 3 ZE520KL, but scored below the LeEco Le Max 2. The bundled headphones are comfy and loud, they have a clear sound and the bass is quite good. FM radio is also here and overall acoustics are fine. Moving on to the camera, you'd expect that we said the same findings of the ZenFone 3 ZE520KL would apply here.

Well, even though the exact same pair of cameras is here, somehow the 5.5 incher feels better when it comes to the actual capture. There's a 16 megapixel back camera, with F/2.0 aperture and 1.12 micron pixels, plus Pixel Master 3.0 tech and a 6 element lens. There's also sapphire glass protection for the camera, laser focus, PDAF and 4 axis OIS.

Then there's a dual tone flash and RGB sensor, plus you should know that the camera is capable of 4K video capture. Finally, the front camera is an 8 MP shooter with F/2.0 aperture. The camera app starts up fast and the cam itself offers fluid zoom, fast focus and fast picture taking. Lots of modes are available here, as per usual for a ZenFone. Here they are: Auto, Manual, HDR Pro, Beauty, Super Resolution, Children, Low Light, QR Code, Night, Depth of Field, Effect, Selfie, GIF, Panorama, Miniature, Time Rewind, Smart Remove, All Smiles, Slow Motion and Time Lapse.

    cam-ui

The Manual mode brings a few sub options, like white balance, exposure, ISO, shutter and focus. We then get to the gallery, starting with day time shots, taken in mod November on a sunny day. The results are very crisp and clear, brightness is great and exposure is quite good. Focus was proper all the time and we really have nothing to complain about here.

We achieved some great closeups of flowers and a nice zoom in quality for that picture of a flag and colors were realistic and well calibrated in general. There was absolutely no blur here and selfies were also bright and crisp, with a good texture of the face. We also achieved one of those shots I like to call a 10 out of 10, featuring those colorful toy balls. Truly excellent:

    balls

Panorama has a rather modest resolution of 9600 x 992 pixels and it came out rather clear and clean, in spite of the shiny sun. We also shot some very nice looking autumn leaves, with a very interesting texture. The HDR is great and it eliminates all the washed out bits of the shots. We also pulled off an HDR of the sunset, that looked mighty fine.

This one is a very pragmatic camera, with excellently calibrated colors and brightness. Somehow it feels better than the camera of the ZE520KL. We achieved great details in landscape shots and registered a solid texture for the graffiti pics. It can equal and surpass the Huawei Nova and Nova Plus, also it beats the Galaxy A5 (2016) and can even fight the iPhones on equal terms, clarity-wise.

    day-1

Low light pictures feature great details, they're very bright and so is the flash by the way. Street light halos have OK sizes and the texture of monuments and brick walls is nice and all. There's no violet or blue hue here, or it's present in very little manner, compared to the Xperia XZ for example. This is certainly one of the top phones of 2016, when it comes to low light capture, especially among midrangers. Very solid lighting and clarity!

    night-zen-3

As far as videos go, we filmed in MP4, Full HD, at 30 FPS and 20 Mbps, or 4K at 43 Mbps. The result was rather crisp, but the background was a bit blurry. There were also some sudden exposure changes and colors felt a bit too vivid. The sky was basically white, but at least clarity was OK and focus was good. The microphone also behaved in exemplary fashion and we registered a nice zoom quality on those seagulls.

The OIS test brought on a case of flicker and focus loss for some reason, but clarity remained solid. Indoors I used the phone to film a local Watch Dogs 2 launch and met with a nice mic, good colors, clarity and even good stabilization. Low light video capture featured some flicker, good clarity and also reasonably sized street light halos.

Brightness was just fine for night time capture, colors were also quite good and overall everything was fine, but somehow below the champions like Huawei Mate 8 or the last year Nexus models. Still, video capture is totally superior to the ASUS ZenFone 2 generation. Now that the camera is done, let's talk about the browser. The browser of choice here is Chrome, that's very fast and also registers good benchmarks, such as SunSpider and Vellamo.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_087

We also get the typical ASUS virtual keyboard with numeric row and comfy arrangement of keys, as tested in the video review below. As far as connectivity goes, there's an USB Type C port here, WiFi a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Glonass, Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi Direct. This one is a dual SIM phone, with a microSIM and a nano SIM card slot, the latter also being used to host the microSD.

Only one SIM is able to connect to 4G at one time and we get LTE Category 7 support here, with up to 300 Mbps in download speed. That's the Chinese version at least, since the international model offers LTE Category 4, with up to 150 Mbps download speed. Getting to the Dialer, it has a Block List, Speed Dial and Call Recording, plus a ton of other options.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_045

Calls are loud and clear, they sound great and the signal is also good. We also did a SpeedTest, achieving 165 Mbps in download on WiFi and 25 Mbps in upload. On 4G we reached 77 Mbps in download and 47 Mbps in upload, which frankly speaking could be higher, for both 4G values. The WiFi is inferior compared to the ZenFone ZE520KL, but the 4G is above it, so all's good in the end.

    speedtest

This smartphone runs Andrid 6.0.1 Marshmallow, with Zen UI 3.0 on top, that sports a flat UI and tons of customizations and options. Multitasking is still done via carousel and there's also pinning here. The dropdown bit includes notifications and Quick Settings, which are shown as flat and lightly colored bubbles, as usual for ZenFones.

If you keep pressed the homescreen, you will trigger sections like apps & widgets (transparent and blue-ish ones from ASUS), options used to edit the homescreens (icon size, icon align, scroll effects and font size), plus icon label color, font type, wallpapers, icon packs, themes and lock apps. Folder options are here and even the animations can be switched.

    ui

A swipe down on the homescreen shows both a search window for apps and what's trending online. Now getting to the Settings, they include functions like ASUS Cover, Do Not Disturb, ZenMotion (Double Tap to Wake, Draw Letters to open apps, One Hand Mode and Flip). Finally, there's a Glove Mode here and options related to Game Genie, the gaming feature of the phone, that lets you record gaming sessions or stream them live via Twitch or YouTube, with facecam included.

And we're not even done with the Settings, that include Themes, Easy Mode, Kids Move, Screenshot and the fingerprint scanner options. The latter has a 10 step setup, lets you unlock the device in a fast and accurate manner and also lets you answer calls, take pics and more. The preinstalled apps list is as usual filled with apps, around 52 of them this time.

    asus-zenfone-3-ze552kl_084

Lots can be uninstalled luckily. On the list we find names like Kindle, Facebook, Do It Later, Laser Ruler, Mini Movie, Mobile Manager, Photo Collage, Quick Memo and Web Storage. All's fine and dandy, so now it's time for the verdict.

    Here are the Pros:

  • premium design
  • bright screen
  • great performance
  • solid battery
  • loud speaker
  • great pictures and selfies
  • welcome gaming functions
  • And the Cons:

  • many apps preinstalled
  • too many options, settings, functions
  • optical image stabilization brings on flicker and focus loss when filming
  • not many changes from older Zen UI to the new one
  • Overall, the ASUS ZenFone 3 ZE552KL is the best midrange phone of the year, standing our through camera, display, battery, audio and performance. It can easily replace a flagship, without regrets or remorse and also by spending much less. It totally rivals and even surpasses the Galaxy A 2016 models, fights the Huawei Nova Plus on equal terms and looks prettier, plus has an excellent battery.

It's a total evolution from the ZenFone 2 and opens the door to a perfect ZenFone 4 next year. The updated price of this ZenFone is here.
