Dual-camera rumored to be reserved for large iPhone variant

We've seen several rumors about the next iPhone generation coming with a dual-lens camera setup. Considering that the LG G5 has already launched with dual cameras and the upcoming Huawei P9 is pretty much confirmed to come with one, these rumors appear more likely to become reality by the day.

Now KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo provides some more detail in a research note saying that the dual-cam technology will be exclusive to the large form factor iPhone with 5.5-inch screen. This is bad news for all fans of the 4.7-inch iPhone or the even smaller new 4-inch iPhone SE, but follows in line with Apple's current product strategy to reserve premium features like optical image stabilization for the larger model.

"New iPhone shipments to be capped by similar form factor as iPhone 6s & 6s Plus; top hardware upgrade is dual-camera (5.5-inch model only), though many competing models with dual-camera will launch soon, joining others already on the market; first impressions could underwhelm."

Previous rumors also said that the iPhone 7 generation will come with both single and dual camera options, but it has not been clear if both camera options would be available for both iPhone sizes. Apple dual camera technology has been linked to the acquisition of LinX technology, which specializes in the development of multi-aperture cameras to support 3D depth mapping, improved color accuracy, lower noise levels and higher image resolutions among other benefits.

Another Image Of The Huawei P9 Leaks, Complete With Leica Camera

At this point, it feels like we know quite a lot about the Huawei P9, the Chinese manufacturer's new flagship. Thanks to the earlier VentureBeat leak, we know there'll likely be a version packing 4GB RAM and a high-end Kirin 955 SoC, and possibly a cheaper, lower-end version with a Kirin 950 and 3GB RAM, both with a 5.2-inch 1080p display.

Yesterday, however, a new image of the P9 leaked, courtesy of Evan Blass, a.k.a. @evleaks. The image, which looks like a press shot or similar, shows the back of the phone, with the dual-camera set up and fingerprint sensor. But what's significant here is the Leica camera, with a SUMMARIT H 1: 2.2/27 lens (f/2.2 aperture, 27mm focal length). Summarit is the mid-range brand of Leica lenses; the "affordable" range, if you will. Interestingly, Huawei announced a partnership with Leica in February, saying the two companies want to "create a powerhouse in the reinvention of smartphone photography." Leica is, of course, one of the world's foremost high-end, money-is-no-object camera manufacturers, so Huawei partnering with them is a pretty big deal for mobile photography.

Huawei has a press event in London on Wednesday, where it's expected to announce the new flagship. If the minisite is anything to go by, it definitely looks like photography and the camera will be a big part of the event, especially considering the tagline, "Change the way you see the world."

Microsoft Surface Phone Price Revealed; To Run On 8GB RAM, 512GB Storage

According to reports from supply chain at the start of this year, the successors of Surface pro and Surface Book were to be released late next year to make room for a possible Surface smartphone that will be released this year.

Microsoft Surface Phone is proof that the multinational giant is not leaving the mobile wars clear for Android and iOS. Now, if the Surface Phone will be the "ultimate business phone", it is safe to assume that users should expect more than that.

Microsoft has been a company which has been coming out with a large number of updates and upgrades in the recent past, and has been innovating the markets of technology with their operating systems and software technologies. Microsoft chief marketing officer, Chris Capossela, hinted in December of the development of the Microsoft Surface Phone.

The media agency quotes PC Tablet in reporting that the Microsoft Surface Phone is expected to have a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, Intel Atom x3 processor with 4GB RAM, Windows 10 OS and as much as 256GB to 500GB internal storage.

On the other hand, it can be remembered that Microsoft's Lumia boasted a 41 megapixel PureView camera, which was nearly similar to a DSLR camera and crowned as the best mobile phone camera.

The Microsoft Surface Phone is reportedly geared to be categorized as a business phone. Apart from the units, the Microsoft Store is also offering a $30 discount on the Surface Dock when purchased together with a Surface Book.

While Microsoft disappointingly did not unveil the Microsoft Surface Phone in the 2016 Mobile World Conference, the delay has only heightened expectations for the new Windows Phone. Reports suggest that the Microsoft Surface Phone will, instead, follow the release cycle that the technology giant uses.

The Surface Phone, as stated by the outlet, will have a unibody design made with a combination of magnesium and aluminum.

An image of the soon-to-be-unveiled Huawei P9 has surfaced online, revealing the flagship smartphone will house dual camera setup.

Popular Twitter spy Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) has got hold of the Huawei P9's photo showing the rear of the device. In the image, we see the metal-clad phone featuring two cameras placed side by side on the left side, having dual-tone LED flash, laser autofocus and Leica's name engraved on the right side.

We can also see the device featuring a Huawei brand name and on top a square-shaped fingerprint sensor, just below the camera module.

It looks like Huawei P9's USP will be the camera. The additional camera sensor besides the main camera module of the device will be used to capture detailed depth information of the scene, enabling user to re-focus objects on the photos through a photo application.

For the uninitiated, Leica is a renowned German optic firm known for its top-notch rangefinder cameras.

There is already a handful of dual-camera-based smartphones in the market, but the use of Leica-branded shooters will certainly make Huawei P9 stand apart.

Other expected features of Huawei P9:

From what we have gathered so far, the the upcoming Huawei phone is expected to sport a 5.2-inch full-HD display on the front, a fingerprint sensor, the company's proprietary HiSilicon Kirin 950 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage and a 3,900mAh battery.

Rumour has it that Huawei P9 will be accompanied by another higher-end model tentatively titled P9 Premium, which is said to boast a top-notch processor and high-capacity memory. It is said to feature the powerful HiSilicon Kirin 955 SoC (System-on-Chip), sumptuous 4GB RAM, 64GB/128GB storage and a USB Type-C port.

The company has confirmed it will unveil Huawei P9 April 16. Since the launch event is almost two weeks away, the Chinese firm is expected to tease key features of the device to drum up excitement among fans.

You can find the pictures they took in our galleries below. In Google Drive, you have the additional option to preview all the images in high-resolution. As this is a blind test, which camera took which images is not disclosed (yet).

Huawei P9 confirmed to feature Leica camera

Back in February, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei announced a new partnership with Germany's high-end camera company Leica, stating the two were going to work together on mobile photography. No other details were revealed at the time, but the fact that the two have nearly zero overlap when it comes to products or target markets hinted at the possibility of a collaboration on something new.

Now we know for sure: Huawei has confirmed that its upcoming P9 flagship phone will feature a camera developed in cooperation with Leica. "We are going to launch our P9 flagship phone very soon and this is a product that we worked with Leica to produce," said Huawei deputy chairman Guo Ping at an announcement in China.

Details about the P9 have been leaked for several weeks now, including images of the chassis, details on specs, and the fact that it will feature a dual camera arrangement on the rear. It still isn't clear exactly where Leica's involvement has been focused, but the expectations are that the P9 will have a 12-megapixel sensor for one of the rear cameras, along with optical image stabilization and laser auto-focus.

Fortunately we won't have long to wait to find out, as Huawei has scheduled a special event for Wednesday, April 6th, and the P9's official unveiling is almost a sure thing.
