Apple is supposed to launch two variants, a 4.7-inch iPhone 7 with iSight camera supporting optical image stabilisation, and the bigger and powerful iPhone 7 Pro/ Plus featuring an all-new dual camera setup and 3GB of RAM.
Here we are going to talk about Apple's plans of implementing the dual-camera setup technology, which is going to be the biggest camera feature of the upcoming iPhone. Let's get started.
What made Apple sign up for Dual-camera Setup?
It all started with Apple's acquisition of LinX technologies, an imaging company that creates smartphone cameras featuring special sensor arrays and algorithms to create high-quality images to match DSLR cameras in smaller packages. T he imaging company apparently provided a method to fix the blurring issues faced by Apple engineers while testing dual-camera setups on iPhones.
Apple also seems interested to integrate the technology as dual-camera setup is slowly becoming a standard camera feature for flagship devices. LG, Huawei, HTC are already using dual-camera modules on their flagship devices.
Importantly, Apple also realizes the fact that its iPhones, even the latest ones (iPhone 6S/6S Plus) lack behind the competition when it comes to imaging capabilities. This is the reason Apple has spent the last three years testing dual-lens camera systems for the upcoming iPhones, as claimed by CEO of Altek, a company that creates dual-lens cameras for HTC and Huawei.
iPhone 7 camera vs others
If rumors are to be believed, iPhone 7 will have a pair of cameras where one of the sensors is mono (capturing only black s and whites), the other sensor will capture colour. This is exactly what Huawei uses in its recent flagship smartphone- the P9, but the handset is not very good at handling low-light shots.
This might not be an issue with the iPhone 7 because as per some recent claims by LinX's, the company has further improved low light performance and general image quality that can differentiate iPhone 7 from the Huawei P9.
But how will Apple iPhone 7 compete with LG G5, which has by far the most innovative dual-camera setup technology in the smartphone world. We believe Apple is hardly going to match up the level of wide-angle view (135 degrees) that is being offered by the LG G5, even though LG is rumored to supply the camera sensors to Apple for iPhone 7.
In any case, a dual-lens system will definitely help Apple deal with the exposure and a tad slower autofocus issues seen on iPhones. The expected enhancements to sensors will be a huge upgrade to Apple smartphones, which are lacking behind the competition in terms of features and quality.
