Lenovo launches PHAB2 Pro, world's first phone featuring Google's Tango technology

A lot's still riding on this summer's retail debut of the Lenovo Phab2 Pro - will smartphone users really appreciate all Tango can do, or could even advanced tech like this risk being interpreted as a gimmick? - but this new brand identity helps reinforce that Google's got big plans for Tango, and we're likely to see it appear on even more hardware to come. The phone will be available globally this September and will reach the United States before the end of the year. Look for it to land unlocked in the U.S. this September priced at $499 in your choice of gray or gold aluminum finish. CEO Yuanqing Yang says the phone has more cameras and sensors than any other mobile device on the market.

Thanks to Project Tango, the phone uses the motion tracking and the depth sensing cameras to learn areas, so it can recognize places (say, rooms) in which it's been before. The company also took time to highlight Lowe's Vision, Lowe's new home improvement feature that's created to utilize Tango technology. Since Tango knows how large a space is, it can also insert virtual instances of objects like furniture into the space, so homeowners can see just how a particular piece of furniture will fit into a room.

Additionally the Phab 2 Pro has 4GB of RAM and a special edition Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor with Qualcomm's Fluence Pro feature for "enhanced noise isolation".

Google already has released experimental Tango devices designed for computer programmers, spurring them to build about 100 apps that will work with Lenovo's new phone.

There's also a 16-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front camera, depth camera, and a motion camera (the latter two are also on the back). It comes with a 6.4-inch QHD IPS touchscreen, and no less than four cameras.

Lenovo will offer the Phab2 in three different models with the Phab2 Pro outlined here being the flagship (it'll also be the only one with Tango capabilities). The handset will be available unlocked in Champagne Gold and Gunmetal Grey colour variants. Also, the Moto Z Force includes a 21 megapixel rear camera, featuring optical image-stabilisation, phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and laser autofocus.

Other features include a fingerprint scanner, a 1-hand operation mode (since it can be kind of tough to use a 6.4 inch phone with a single hand if you don't have enormous hands), and Dolby Atmos sound output as well as Dolby 5.1 channel audio capture, which makes the Phab 2 Pro the first phone with that feature.
