The phone case that comes with a built-in DRONE: Prototype design includes UAV to help take better selfies

  • Drone-in-a-Phone Case has mini-craft and camera in slide-out compartment
  • When drone is taken out, foldable propellers move into the correct position
  • Drone and cameras are tethered to the phone extending the reach for photo

The next wave of personal drones may fit discreetly inside of your phone case.

A new concept called 'Drone-in-a-Phone' reveals a tiny, foldable quadcopter contained in a slide-out compartment of a smartphone case.

Drawing power from the phone's battery, the small craft can fly for over 25 minutes at a time and uses tethered cameras to take aerial photos.

The phone case contains a slide-out drawer, inside of which lies a tiny four-propeller drone and a camera.

The drone and cameras are tethered to the phone, extending the reach of the smartphone to enable photos at otherwise unattainable angles.

Camera lenses can be swapped out to take different types of photos, including standard, wide angle, and macro.

This gadget will also work with a magnetic mounting system, which can be used to attach the cameras to moving objects, like a car.

And, using a camera module, the case can also have its own built-in selfie stick.

The concept from London-based Buzz Technology was recently selected as a finalist in the British Inventors Project.

In a video explaining the design, the creators show how the phone case contains a slide-out drawer, inside of which lies a tiny four-propeller drone and a camera.

When the drone is taken out of the case, the foldable propellers move into the correct position.

The drone and camera are tethered to the phone, extending the reach of the smartphone to enable photos at otherwise unattainable angles.

And, this also prevents the drone from being swept away by the wind.

The craft will fly for longer than current micro-drones, which typically achieve 4-5 minutes.

Powered by the attached smartphone, the creators say it will fly for upwards of 25 minutes.

In addition to this, the camera will be 8-12 MP to stay up to par with smartphone capabilities.

'Attached to an integrated drone, it would enable long flight times and high resolution photography,' the video explains.

The tethered camera can even be attached to a pair of glasses.

This gadget will also work with a magnetic mounting system, which can be used to attach the cameras to moving objects, like a car.

Doing this would allow a person to take action shots with less risk.

The camera can also be flipped around, which the creators say eliminates the need for a front-facing selfie camera.

And, using a camera module, the case can also have its own built-in selfie stick.

This pulls out like an antenna and attaches to the tethered camera.

As development continues, the creators explain a built-in battery pack could be used to extend the capabilities of the drone, or even be used as a backup for the phone.

Accordin g to Buzz Technology, the team will be launching a Kickstarter for the drone-in-a-phone case in September of this year.
