Huawei Is Hoping This Weird Three-Camera Phone Will Challenge the iPhone

Other key features of the smartphone are slim bezels and metal unibody with ceramic finishing. That's no bad thing and this is mainly from the back. The other one is a monochrome camera that specialises in reproducing picture detail.

Camera-wise, the Huwei P9 boats two 12 MP sensors placed on its back side, while on its front there is an 8 MP shooter meant to take care of your selfie and video call needs. The internal storage is 16GB and is expandable up to 128GB more via the microSD card slot.

Huawei has made sure that their flagship does not lag behind the other specifications as well.

There are few differences between the two smartphones, namely battery, display size and type, as well as inbuilt storage and memory. The curved rear offers a fingerprint sensor towards the top in the middle, while dual camera lenses and Leica branding sit within the wide antenna strip at the top of the device. However, the company also faces potential obstacles due to its Chinese roots and infrastructure - founder and president Ren Zhengfei began his career as a military technologist for the People's Liberation Army. This is pretty similar, and has the same camera setup.

The two new devices, the P9 and larger P9 Plus both have dual camera lenses, and were engineered in partnership with German camera firm Leica. It also has a Leica black and white mode.

As well as improved image quality, colours and low-light performance, the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus can also let the user adjust photos after they, such as isolating one image and making it black-and-white (or colour), or adjusting which part of the photo is in focus. Thus, according to the smartphone maker, the cameras will be able to bring more light and clarity to photos.

The phone uses a laser autofocusing system and will run a dedicated depth processor for calculating autofocus. Notably missing from the spec list is Optical Image Stabilization.

Huawei has been launching some spectacular products lately with their budget Honor series and the much acclaimed Google Nexus 6P. What about the P9 Plus?

The P9 features a 5.2-inch FHD IPS LCD display and gets its juice from a 3,000mAh battery. The P9 Plus also acts as an all-in-one remote control and features a Press Touch display, which acts like Apple's Force Touch display. The smartphone's can also take in three times the light information through Huawei P9's double-camera system, the report noted.

It didn't seem slow but, as usual with a Huawei, the P9 doesn't have an apps menu. Pricing starts at €599 ($680) for the standard P9 and €749 ($850) for its bigger brother. The mobile market could undergo some very interesting changes when the P9 and P9 Plus launch on April 16th.

The price for Huawei P9 is expected to be more or less £490 or $690 while the Plus variant might get a price tag worth £549 or about $775.
