Samsung has officially announced the much anticipated Galaxy S7 and its sister Galaxy S7 Edge. Galaxy S7 was highly tipped to be a unique smartphone with high-end features focusing on latest technology.

The anticipated smartphone was finally announced and its features as well as release date revealed. To the surprise of many, the new Samsung Galaxy handset turned out to be an improved version of the Galaxy S6 smartphone. The design, display and some features of the new handset are almost similar to the preceding Galaxy smartphone model. Galaxy S7 also received a new processor – Snapdragon 820 – and is packed with a 4GB RAM.
There is also one notable feature that the South Korean firm has made a technical change and improvement on; the S7 camera. The latest Samsung flagship has a 1/ 2.5" Sony IMX260 camera sensor which has larger individual pixels compared to Galaxy S6. Galaxy S7 has a wider aperture of f/1.7 with reduced camera bump height of 0.46mm. In further enhancement of the camera, Samsung has dropped the phase detection autofocus (PDAF) for Dual Pixel technology.
Dual Pixel technology
In essence, the Dual Pixel technology is ideally more of the phase detection autofocus. The PDAF takes a single measurement from the reverse sides of the lens in the calculation of the focus. It ideally hastens the process of focusing images. The phase detection relies on special photodiodes found on the sensor pixels.
The photodiodes are scattered relatively few and far between transversely the surface of the sensor. Approximately between 5-10 % of the entire sensor pixels are phase detection supported. For the Dual Pixel tech, two photodiodes per pixel are utilized for focusing. In total, 100% of the pixels will now be used.
Accurate and quick focusing
The Dual Pixel technology enhances faster speed of focusing as well delivering a more accurate focus. Enhanced speed and accuracy in the focus conveyed by the Dual Pixel technology, ensures superb capture of live footage, objects in motion and also low-light scenes. This technology enables a quick sharp focus just like the natural normal human eyes.
Irrespective of the position, quick and accurate focus is achieved using the Samsung Galaxy S7 camera. This tech embraced by Samsung in this latest handset's camera has been used previously in mirrorless shooter lenses and other DSRL. It is however, remarkably the first of its kind to be adopted for a phone camera.
With Sony's latest Predictive Hybrid Autofocus tech that has also been recently unleashed for its Xperia X phones, a clash is expected between the camera systems of the new smartphone releases.
