Gionee P8W with 5″ HD Display & 8MP Camera to Launch Soon in India

Earlier this year, the Chinese smartphone company, Gionee teased the launch of a new smartphone called Gionee P8 Max as the successor to the 2016 launched Gionee P7 Max. Now, the company will also bring the entry-level smartphone called Gionee P8W. It will be the successor to Gionee P5W that was launched here in India in December 2015. As seen with the other entry-level smartphones, the Gionee P8W comes with a polycarbonate shell. It has the curved rear edges which the company calls 3D back-arc design that offer a nice grip to hold the device.

On the front of the P8W is a 5-inch IPS display with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution, this is the same display we have seen on the Gionee P5W. Under the hood is the MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz and coupled with Mali T780 GPU. There is 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage that can be additionally expanded upto 128GB. Compared to P5W, the P8W pack upgraded camera sensors, there is an 8MP autofocus rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP fixed focus front camera for selfies. It runs on the in-house Amigo 3.5 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

As seen with the other Gionee devices, the P8W also includes a lot of bloatware apps which take the available storage further down. The 2,300mAh removable battery on this device might not last more than a day of usage. On the right edge of the device, we can find the volume rocker and the power button. The dual SIM slots and MicroSD card can be found under the removable back cover. Gionee also offers a screen protector and a transparent case for free within in the package. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, 3.5 Audio port, and a MicroUSB 2.0 port.

On the bottom edge of the Gionee P8W is the stereo loudspeaker. While the Gionee P5W powered by MT6735 SoC didn't support 4G LTE connectivity, the P8W at least comes with LTE compatibility. Additionally, we expect it to support VoLTE for using with Jio 4G SIM. Even the Gionee P8 Max also comes with the same 3D back-arc design as on the Gionee P8W. While the P8W sports a 5-inch display, the P8 Max comes with a larger 5.5-inch display but with the same 720p resolution. Both the P8W and P8 Max lacks the fingerprint sensor which can be seen on most of the other budget smartphones.

Compared to P8W, the P8 Max will feature better specifications and also a higher price tag. The sports 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. On the camera front, there is a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP selfie camera. The battery on this device will be bumped up to 3,150mAh capacity. Take these details with a pinch of salt as they are to be made official. It would have been nice to see HTC really push the boat out in terms of design, but the minimal tweaks they've made to stock Android are amazing, making this one of our favourite smartphones in 2017.

9. Huawei Mate 9

If your budget can't quite stretch to a snazzy California or South Korean-designed smartphone, you may wish to consider a Chinese brand instead. The Huawei Mate 9 is the best smartphone to hail from the People's Republic. It has a great 5.9-inch display, and brilliant battery life thanks to the large 4,000 mAh unit. It's not without its flaws though, the Emotion UI isn't great (although, has been improved over previous generations), and the design just isn't as sleek as its rivals.

The Moto X Force is a refreshing phone - rather than trying to be elegant and premium - it's durable and will survive a beating. That's mainly down to the screen, which features a thick, toughened outer layer which won't break - not matter how hard you try. The casing is also pretty rugged, our favourite finish being the 'Ballistic Nylon' back. The specs are pretty powerful, and the battery life is also impressive.

Honor 6X Smartphone Camera Samples captured with the Dual Camera Setup

When your smartphone on rear side looks like some of the today's most expensive phones, you do get excited about it. Honor 6X is such a smartphone, it's dual-lens camera setup excites us a lot. The 12-megapixel primary sensor and 2-megapixel wide aperture lens together clubs for an impressive team as they set out to offer DSLR-like bokeh effects and many more features.

Before it's launch in the country that is exclusively going to available with Amazon India this month. We had the chance to spend quality time with the device's camera. We took it for spin during different lighting conditions and in each condition it turns out to be a great camera at heart. You get detailed pictures even in the low lighting conditions. While in the natural and artificial it showcases the maximum details one can expect to see in the object. There is virtually no noise, which goes in flow with the high-quality 12-megapixel sensor.

We recommend you should stop yourself from expecting a Huawei P9 beater, because it's not at that level, although, you should be more than happy. The company hasn't confirmed whether the 6X packs the same Sony IMX268 hardware as the Honor 8 does, but from the experience of using both the devices, it indeed feels like the same sensor. The brand has taken an approach that someone should have ages ago. The approach of offering a lower-end priced handset with sort of camera you get in a Premium Android handset. Meaning one that keeps resolution sensible and improves the low-light photo quality in doing so.

There's always lots going on when we talk abut the Honor phones in terms of software in camera department. You get a separate "shallow depth of field" mode which is said to blur out the background or foreground. The secondary camera works it's magic here as it examines which objects are far away, thus helping in defocusing or focusing them. In this way the object stands out. Do make a note that the object needs to be within 2 meters range to get the best result.

The wide aperture mode lets you dial in the aperture from f/16 to as wide as f/0.95. What it means is that it allows for large bokeh effects like you get in DSLR. The quality is at such level that you can compare the output with a DSLR if doing an amateur photography. As you change the aperture it does give you more or less depth of field. Though, do make a note that it does allow more light into the camera. But it's not a true aperture change in the purest form as seen on the DSLRs. However, it indeed convinces user that they can change aperture since the bokeh effect works out quite well.

Windows Camera has been updated for Windows 10 Mobile devices in the Windows Store. Microsoft has introduced improvements and bug fixes with latest update for Windows Camera.

The update makes Windows Camera stable and improves performance of the app as well. The latest update is currently live in the Production Ring for Windows 10 Mobile users only. It is worth noting that the update is still rolling out, so it may or may not be available for your phone yet.

Honor 6X Detailed Camera Review with Modes, Options, Settings & Features

Usually, when you talk about the smartphone cameras in the mid-range they all mostly tend to be hanging on the same ladder of being a decent capturer, good for amateur photography. Which is why I usually don't recommend when somebody ask me to suggest an excellent camera smartphone in the mid-range. Because honestly, I didn't think there is any camera worth calling excellent in the mid-range. Up until now!

Yes, with Honor introducing the 6X dual-camera setup smartphone we feel the camera department in the mid segment has just risen to a whole new level. Earlier we took the device for a spin to specifically test out the dual-camera mode called Shallow Depth of Field. But now in this story, we are going to completely examine what all Honor 6X's camera has to offer that company is touting it so much. Let's find out.

Below you can read our detailed camera review of the Honor 6X, which includes an explanation of the camera specifications, camera app, modes, video recording, selfie module and camera outputs in all lighting conditions.

Camera Specifications – Rear & Front

Even in such times, consumers are misguided by many brands that a large megapixel count means that the camera output would be amazing with clear details. To be completely honest, that is not the case in truth. It's not exactly entirely dependent on the camera's resolution to determine whether the outputs would be of highest quality or not. Sometimes even the cameras with largest of the megapixel count fail to amaze users with its outputs.

Since we have got your attention to the megapixel count, the new Honor 6X comes with a 12-megapixel resolution on the primary sensor, while the secondary sensor has a 2-megapixel resolution. The brand hasn't confirmed this but we feel it's the same Sony IMX368 sensor is used that was equipped on the Honor 8 launched last year in India. But on company's official global website, the camera sensor mention has model number IMX368. It also comes with dual-camera setup, but there you get dual 12MP module. So, you could see the difference in specifications. Honor 6X is a low-end variant offering from a company with a setup present on their flagship handset. Companies usually tend to offer such handsets, to give their lower-end consumers the feel of premium. Although, what they won't get is superior quality, well, it's up for debate some other time.

Talking about the camera technologies at play on the rear module. Starting with wide aperture range, the camera allows you to change aperture for objects up to 2 meters. The range varies from f/0.95 to f/16, change according to the bokeh effect quantity you want in the capture. This setup easily mimics the DSLR bokeh effects and changing the aperture range, but isn't a true aperture change in the purest form as you can do on a DSLR. There is also a PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) technology that touts ultra-fast focusing of 0.3 seconds. We can't time that but can surely say that it indeed offers fast focusing of the object as the camera doesn't let you hanging to focus even when the picture is moving too quickly.

Moving on to the specification of the front-facing module, the selfie camera on the Honor 6X is of 8-megapixel resolution. Looking at the current Selfie scenario in the country, it is an ideal selfie camera offering a range of features such as Beautification, 77 degree wide-angle lens, and a Prim ISP. We used the selfie camera and found that it adapts the skin-color to make the portrait look interesting as it gives auto-touch ups using software algorithms. There is a feature in the editing app called Splash, it allows you to hide colors and highlight only one color in the picture, giving picture a cool look.

Camera App – Modes

Moving on to the camera modes, the Honor 6X offers an impressive set of modes. Before talking about those modes, let's briefly take a look around the app. Every other week, a new device comes to my desk, but Honor handsets have always impressed me in terms of the intuitiveness. The Honor 6X's camera app isn't much different, which is a good thing as it offers a clean look and easy to reach buttons. Accessing modes is quite easy just swipe left, and you get a list of modes such as Pro, Beauty, HDR, Night Shot, Panorama, Good Food, Light Painting, watermark, audio note and Document scan. While if you swipe, you get all the camera settings ranging from resolution change, GPS tag, camera grid, shutter sound mute, audio control, timer, touch to capture feature, capture smiles, object tracking and much more. On the camera app home screen, you see a shutter button, gallery access, video mode, camera switch button, filters, flashlight and the shallow depth of field button to change the wide aperture of the capture.

Let's talk briefly about the significant modes. Starting with HDR, we have noticed that rarely any handset offer to turn ON flashlight during HDR captures, but the camera app on the Honor handset offers this feature, which comes handy in dark light macro shots. The Pro mode is available for a photo as well as video mode, where you can control the exposure, white balance, ISO, focus and other camera factors that result in a change of output. We recommend using this mode only if you're familiar with these terminologies, otherwise going with Auto mode is the best decision you'll ever make. Interestingly, beauty mode is available in photo and video, both the modes. We don't recommend using Night Shot mode if you don't have steady hands or tripod with you because the night shot demands 15 seconds of still photography. As the software merges the video, allowing it to showcase the details even in the dark light. For low light captures, just use HDR or even normal mode is fine w hen you have got some light shedding on the object. There is a specific food mode for all your food pictures you plan to put on Instagram and Facebook. In the video part, sadly there is no 4K video recording support, but you can record time-lapse and slow-motion videos if that's your thing to do.

Verdict

Let's not tease you guys anymore, so I would answer the question whether Honor 6X stands out in the camera department among the other mid-range handset or not. Well, it indeed does stand out with its dual-camera setup and fancy features that are more resourceful than we would like to admit sometimes. No brands go to such length to offer an unimaginably powerful camera in the mid-segment of handsets in India. Honor 6X does right by the consumers and amateur photographers who like to take out their camera phones everywhere they go. The new handset from Honor is a perfect handset for people looking to get most of the camera setup on their next affordable mid-ranger.

Selfly pocket-sized camera drone snaps to a smartphone when not in use

A new pocket-sized consumer camera drone has launched on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, where the team behind it seeks $125k in funding. Called Selfly, this drone is dubbed a 'smart flying phone case camera' due to its unique storage design. When not in use, Selfly folds into a compact rectangular shape that can be attached to the back of an included smartphone case.

Selfly is a small autonomous camera drone that, when stored, folds into a 9mm phone case. When removed from the case, four rotors appear to automatically lift the drone into the air where it hovers by default. The related mobile app offers optional control modes, including 'Stick Control,' 'Voice Control,' and 'Fly By Picture.' 

The integrated camera features an 8MP sensor able to record video at 1080p/30fps; live video broadcasting is supported, though flight time tops out at only five minutes. The drone is compatible with all 4" to 6" smartphones via its Universal Flip Cover Case. Additionally, Selfly has dedicated phone cases for the iPhone 6/6 Plus/7/7 Plus, Galaxy S6/7 edge, Galaxy 7, and the Nexus 6.

Selfly is similar to the pocket-sized AirSelfie drone that launched on Kickstarter late last year. That drone's campaign has ended after exceeding its funding goal; backers pledged more than €570,000.

Google Pixel 2 Rumors: Topnotch Camera, Advanced Processor Coming on Pixel 2; Budget-Friendly Pixel 2B In Works

Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are expected to get succeeded by newer smartphones later this year. However, the rumor mill has revealed that the alleged Google Pixel 2 will be arriving with advanced features and a higher pricing. Also, a cheaper Pixel phone is also said to be in works.

Water-resistant Chassis

One of the rumored features of Google Pixel 2 is that it will be coming with a water-resistant body. However, it is said to be "still on the table," indicating the Google is still not sure about adding water-resistance feature to Pixel 2.

However, major flagships from other brands like iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy S7 and the upcoming LG G6 are equipped with water-resistant chassis, it is likely that the Google will include the feature on Pixel 2.

Topnotch Camera

The 12.3-megapixel is one of the bestselling features of the original Google Pixel. DxOMark, a benchmarking platform for cameras has a given a rating of 89 to the main camera of Google Pixel which makes it the best smartphone camera ever. Rumors have it that one of beat features of Google Pixel 2 will be its topnotch camera.

Google is unlikely to increase the megapixel count, but rumors hint that the stellar camera of Pixel 2 will support advanced low-light photography and it will be also coming with some new features.

Advanced Processor

Google is speculated to be testing multiply prototypes of Pixel 2 with different kinds of processors. One of the prototypes is powered by Snapdragon 83X SoC whereas there is another variant that includes Intel chipset. Also, the search engine is rumored to be testing a custom chipset for Pixel 2. Speculations even suggested that Google is working with MediaTek for Pixel 2. However, this rumor seems unlikely to come true.

Cheaper Pixel 2B Arriving?

The Google Pixel 2 is expected to arrive with an expensive price tag. The starting price of the first-generation Pixel 2 is $649. However, the Pixel 2 is expected to cost "at least" $50 more than the current pricing of Pixel.

Apart from the pricey Pixel 2, Google is also speculated to be working a Pixel 2B that will be coming with modest specs as well as significantly lower price tag.By launching the alleged Pixel 2B phone, the company aims to bring the "Google experience and Google Phone" to developing markets.
