iPhone 7 Battery and Camera Bulge May Get Bigger

The iPhone 7 may be Apple's next big release, but that's not all that's big about the new phone. According to Forbes, the next iPhone will have a bigger battery, camera lens, and camera bulge as well.

A bigger iPhone 7 battery is probably not something most users would complain about, especially considering it was technically downgraded in the 6S as compared to the 6, dropping from a 1810 mAh battery to 1715 mAh. Forbes reported that a reliable source, Steve Hemmerstoffer, who leaked accurate designs for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S, as well as Samsung's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 prior to their launch, announced on Twitter that he was told the iPhone 7 will be getting its largest battery increase ever, jumping 14% to 1960 mAh. In the article, Forbes' Gordon Kelly stated that if the bigger battery is real, as well as the release of Apple's A10 chipset "could see Apple's quoted 8 hours of usage go as high as 10 hours in my opinion."

The iPhone 7 has been part of rumors ever since the iPhone 6S was announced, but many of them have indicated that Apple's most impressive innovations will be saved for the iPhone's 10th anniversary next year. A bigger battery, while not necessarily surprising, would stand out among most of the rumors for the iPhone 7, which have largely been small, incremental changes.

While a bigger iPhone 7 battery would be good news for most, the other recent leak, also coming from Hemmerstoffer, shows a bigger camera lens. But this new, larger camera lens sticks out more than it does on the 6S, leading to what people refer to as the iPhone's "camera bulge" being even more obtrusive. Hemmerstoffer shared a schematic image on Twitter showing exactly how the lens would extend from the back of the iPhone 7, and it's clearly larger than what exists on the iPhone 6.

The iPhone 7's bigger camera lens increases camera bulge

In addition to reports of a larger iPhone 7 battery, a leaked schematic of the iPhone 7's bigger camera lens surfaced, detailing how much bigger the camera bulge really is. [Image via Nowhereelse.fr]Earlier reports indicate that the iPhone 7 will lose its headphone jack in favor of simply having a lightning port at the bottom. Users will likely need headphones that connect via Bluetooth or a lightning adapter in order to listen to music on their own. Most rumors haven't hinted at any growth in the size of the iPhone's screen itself, indicating Apple will likely release a couple models similarly sized to the 6S and 6S+.

Considering there have been so many rumors over the past year that seemed to indicate this year's model would simply be an internals upgrade, a bigger iPhone 7 battery comes as a bit of a surprise. iPhone users have long bemoaned their device's battery life, although the iPhone 6 made a large jump over the iPhone 5S. So if the report of the new battery in the 7 is true, it would be the largest jump in iPhone history, meaning users may finally be able to move that item off the top of their wishlist. But instead of doing what many users hoped for and eliminating the camera bulge that exists in the 6 and 6S, it appears as though Apple is going the other way and making the bulge even bigger on the iPhone 7.

iPhone 7 battery may get an improvement

If the latest leak is true, the iPhone 7's battery will see a massive increase over the 6S. Samsung, LG, and even Google have all made strides in recent years, which has put pressure on Apple to get even better. Could a bigger camera lens, and subsequent camera bulge, be necessary to put the iPhone back on top for good?

Whether or not the camera lens issue is a deal-breaker for consumers remains to be seen, but for Apple devotees, a bigger iPhone 7 battery will surely be welcomed by all.
