Vivo V1 With 13-Megapixel Camera, Android 5.0 Lollipop Launched in India

Chinese handset brand, Vivo on Tuesday introduced its new Vivo V handset series, with the launch of the Vivo V1. The smartphone would hit the shelves later this month, but the company has not provided pricing beyond the entire series, which will be between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000.

The dual-SIM Vivo V1 runs its own Funtouch 2.1 UI on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop and features a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) resolution display. The handset packs a quad-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor (four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz), along with 2GB of RAM and Adreno 306 GPU.

On the camera front, the Vivo V1 packs a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a front 5-megapixel camera, the same camera setup seen in its flagship smartphone the Vivo X5 Max. The smartphone's front-facing camera houses a wide-angle lens with 6P lenses and an f/2.0 aperture. Different camera modes including Night mode and Panorama is also present. The 16GB inbuilt storage on the V1 is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB).

Vivo has also included a bigger 2300mAh battery in the metal-clad V1 that is significantly bumped up from the 2000mAh one on the flagship X5Max. The V1 also feature a Stamina mode that extends the life of the handset.

Connectivity options on the Vivo V1 include 4G LTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB, and GPS/ A-GPS. The handset will be available in Silver and Gold colour variants. Vivo also announced the V1 Max is set for a launch in India, but did not provide availability details, specifications, or pricing.

Apple's iPhone 7 could have 4K video camera and special recording modes

Leaks come from a now-deleted Weibo post, and fit with the direction that Apple has been pursuing for iPhone 7

Apple's next iPhone could feature a much-upgraded camera and new recording modes that will use the phone's Force Touch screen, according to leaks.

Details of the new phone appear to have been revealed in a now-deleted post from an employee at Foxconn, which makes much of Apple's hardware. It shows that Apple could release a pink iPhone, with an extra high resolution camera and a Force Touch screen that lets it know how hard it is being pressed.

The camera will have a 12MP sensor for taking photos, according to the leaks, and will be able to take 4K video. Like the camera in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it will extend a little from the back of the phone.

When using that camera, the Force Touch feature that will be built into the screen will be able to control extra methods — either triggering a burst of stills during the filming, or switching from photo to video mode, according to different translations.

Force Touch has long been expected to come to the iPhone after being launched in the Apple Watch and new MacBook, and Apple is rumoured to have already put such phones into production.

The phone will also be sped up, with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor working about 30 per cent faster. The phone will also have more RAM, making it faster at processing, but will have the same amount of storage capacity.

Apple's plans for a pink phone were rumoured some months ago, and are confirmed by the leaks.  While some rumours had suggested that would be a rose gold colour, like that in the more expensive Apple Watches, others have suggested it will be a pink aluminium.

A new document leaked by a supposed Foxconn employee, the company that builds the iPhone in China, was obtained by Apple Insider, and it reinforces rumors that the iPhone 6's successor could have a 12-megapixel camera, as well as 2 gigabytes of RAM.

A new, higher-resolution camera may result in photos with even clearer, crisper detail, but megapixels aren't everything when it comes to cameras.

Rather, a 12-megapixel camera compared with the iPhone 6's 8-megapixel shooter would allow you to record slow-motion videos in ultra-high 4K resolution. 4K resolution means video shot with the next iPhone will be about twice as sharp as video shot with the iPhone 6.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus both have 1 GB of RAM, which is your iPhone's short-term memory that lets you bring up recently used apps very quickly. There haven't been many complaints about the iPhone 6's performance, but Apple could just be trying to future-proof the phone for software advancements in coming months and years.

More RAM would let your iPhone store more-often-used apps in the background for you to reopen very quickly. But it could also have a small negative effect on battery life — and on the next iPhone's price tag.

Still, these are just rumors, and Apple Insider also makes a point to mention that the source isn't proven. The alleged leak does, however, back up previous rumors about the next iPhone. In fact, there were rumors as early as last fall saying the next iPhone would get a camera rivaling some "regular" digital cameras.

Other leaks of the purported iPhone 6S' design have appeared online, and there has also been mention of potentially faster 4G LTE performance, as well as better battery life.

Olympus Air A01 turns your smartphone into a mirrorless camera

Olympus has announced its Air A01 add-on camera for smartphones, which turns your Android or iOS device into a very capable mirrorless camera, will be getting a wider release and heading to the US. Previously only available in Japan, the Olympus Air A01 is a smartphone-controlled camera similar to the Sony QX1, but features a Micro Four Thirds lens mount with a matching 16-megapixel sensor and is an open platform for developers.

We've previously seen a number of add-on cameras for smartphones which claim to offer DSLR-like features, including the Sony QX100, Kodak Smart Lens and more recently the DxO One. However, because they all feature built-in lenses they're more like compact camera equivalents rather than interchangeable lens cameras. The Olympus Air A01 is different in that it allows users to mount Micro Four Thirds lenses, in the same way the Sony QX1 uses an E-mount.

In addition to its Micro Four Thirds mount, the Air A01 features the same 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor (17.3 x 13 mm) and TruePic VII image processor as cameras like the OM-D E-M5 II. This enables a burst speed shooting at 10 fps (frames per second) an ISO range up to 12,800 and Full HD 1080p video recording at 30 fps. RAW capture is also possible, and the Air A01 features a silent electronic shutter with a 1/16,000-second maximum shutter speed.

Once the Air A01 is wirelessly connected to a smartphone or tablet users can then control it using a dedicated OA.Central for Olympus Air app. This allows focusing, using a FAST 81-point AF system, by tapping the screen of the smartphone, and making changes to settings such as exposure, white balance and ISO speed. Smartphone photographers can also use the app to access to the same P, A, S and M modes as on an interchangeable lens camera, apply filters, or instantly transfer images.

While the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled Olympus Air A01 can store images and video on a microSD card, they can also be automatically uploaded and securely stored on Amazon Cloud Drive. The device itself measures 56.9 x 57.1 x 43.6 mm (2.2 x 2.3 x 1.7 in) weighs 147 g (4.2 oz) and can be clipped onto a smartphone using the included smartphone holder. The built-in battery is said to be good for 320 shots on a full charge.

The Air A01 can also be used when not attached to a smartphone, enabling use in situations and positions it might be difficult to use a traditionally shaped camera, and automatically knows which way around the cylindrical device is being held. It also features a tripod mount which could be handy for remote shooting.

In addition to appealing to smartphone photographers who want better quality and the creative freedom allowed only by an interchangeable lens system, the Air A01 will also be of interest to developers and makers as it's an open platform. This means developers can produce their own apps for the camera using the available software development kit and makers can easily create accessories.

The Olympus Air A01 will be available in the US from this month in black or white for US$300 body-only, or $500 bundled with a 14-42-mm EZ lens. It will also launch in Canada in August, unfortunately no other international availability has been announced yet.
